Gary Eugene Herr
Gary Eugene Herr, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, and brother, passed away peacefully on August 5, 2023, in Kokomo, Indiana. Born on April 15, 1949, in Bass Lake, Indiana, Gary was a man known for his generous spirit, selfless nature, and handy skills.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents, Willard and Maxine Herr, his brothers David, Dick, Don, Ned, and Frank Herr, and his sister, Kay Peters.
He is survived by his loving wife, Patricia Herr, his children Amy Ragland, step children Alan Rickels (Amie) and Aaron Rickels, his siblings Lois Banta, Carol Herr-Connors, Peggy Hollingsworth (Kent), and George Herr (Dianne), half sister; June Herr, and his cherished grandchildren and great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
Gary was a proud graduate of Culver High School, class of 1968. He furthered his education by attending Southwestern Michigan College. He spent most of his life as a dairy farmer, a profession he thoroughly enjoyed. His working journey also led him to McGills, L.O. Gates, and as a longtime groundskeeper at the University of Notre Dame.
In addition to farming, Gary had a passion for woodworking and gardening. He loved to work with his hands, a trait that was evident in his small repair business, "Gary's Repairs". Here, he offered his services to the community, working on homes and carrying out remodeling projects. Gary's dedication to his work was matched only by his love for his 1963 SS Chevy Impala. This Cherry Red beauty was his pride and joy, and he spent time restoring it to its original glory. He enjoyed driving it in parades and showcasing it at car shows.
Gary's interests extended beyond work and cars. He was an avid collector of model farm tractor toys, a hobby that combined his love for farming and his appreciation for intricate details. His collection was a testament to his patience and his keen eye for quality. Gary's heritage goes back to the 1719 Hans Herr Lancaster Longhouse Museum where you can discover the histories of early Mennonite immigrants, Indigenous people, and how their lives were interconnected. This is located in Lancaster, PA.
Those who knew Gary will remember him as a generous and selfless individual. He was always ready to lend a helping hand, whether it was fixing a neighbor's fence or helping a friend with a home improvement project. His kindness extended to all who knew him, and his legacy will live on in the countless lives he touched.
In his passing, we remember not just the loss of a great man, but the life he lived. Gary was a beacon of kindness and generosity, a devoted family man, and a friend to all. His memory will forever be cherished by his loved ones and all who knew him. His life was a testament to the power of hard work, the joy of simple pleasures, and the importance of family. He will be deeply missed.
