John Jefferson Mackey

John Jefferson Mackey, 94, of Tipton, passed away peacefully on Thursday, March 14, 2024. He was born on June 3, 1929, in Detroit, Michigan, to his parents, Albert Mackey and Maude (Weber) Mackey.

John attended school in Tipton, and then went on to proudly serve in the United States Navy from 1951 through 1953. Through the years, John worked for Excelo in Elwood, (which later became Textron) for nearly 40 years; and then went on to manage The Bottle Shop in Tipton for another 30 years. John had an impeccable work ethic and prided himself on staying active and keeping his mind sharp!

There was never a dull moment with John around. He was innocently funny, and very entertaining. He could be stern and stubborn at times; yet those he loved often saw him as giving, sweet and incredibly kind. John was a big animal lover. He also enjoyed gardening, driving, playing bingo and the lottery. More than anything, John was an awfully proud father and grandfather. Anyone who knew him would tell you that he was a great guy. Many appreciated John for his no nonsense approach to life! He will be greatly missed by all who loved him.

Those left to carry on John’s legacy of love are his son, Mark (Durenda) Mackey; grandchildren, Sabrina Green, Chad Mackey, John (Jamie) Mackey; great grandchildren, Alexus Mackey, Addyson Mackey, Drake Mackey and Olivia Mackey. John was preceded in death by his parents, and 6 siblings.

A service celebrating John’s life will be held on Thursday, March 21, 2024, at 5:00 PM at Taylor & Cowan Funeral Home located at 314 N. Main St. in Tipton with Pastor Dennis Johnson officiating. Visitation for family and friends will take place prior to the service from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM at the funeral home.

Taylor & Cowan Funeral Home is honored to serve the Mackey family in their time of need. Please feel free to leave an online condolence or share a special memory of John with his family on his tribute wall.
