William “Duke” Junior Duffer

William “Duke” Junior Duffer, 82, of Kempton, IN, passed away on August 18, 2024. He was born on August 29, 1941, in Westmoreland, TN, the son of the late Lucian and Ina (Morris) Duffer. Duke was a beloved figure, known for his gentle soul and easygoing nature.

Duke graduated from Jefferson High School in Kempton, IN, in the class of 1961. He honorably served in the Army starting in 1964, where he was respected for his dedication and hard work. Duke enjoyed a fulfilling career and retired after working 31 years at Delco Electronics in Kokomo.

A man of many interests, Duke was an avid deer hunter and enjoyed camping with his children during their younger years. He was well-known at local flea markets and gun and knife shows, where he loved selling his wares alongside his son. Duke cherished his time playing poker and Texas hold ‘em at local card rooms and at the Elks Lodge. He relished going to casinos with his daughter and setting up dinner dates with her and creating lasting memories.

Duke is survived by his daughter, Trena Duffer; brother, Dan Duffer; sister, Dorothy “Dottie” Gibbs; sister-in-law, Sue (Richter) Duffer; and his beloved fur baby, Pepper.

He was preceded in death by his father, Lucian Duffer; mother, Ina (Morris) Duffer; son, Dean Duffer; brothers, JC Duffer, Kenneth Duffer; sister, Deloris (Duffer) Cline.

Duke’s gentle soul and loving presence will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Friends are invited to visit with the family from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, August 22, 2024, at Stout & Son Funeral Home – Russiaville Chapel, 200 E. Main St., Russiaville, IN 46979. Funeral service will begin at 1 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Kempton Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Duke’s memory to the Humane Society of Tipton, in honor of his love for animals.



Phyllis Jeanne Stevenson

Phyllis Jeanne Stevenson, 98, of Noblesville, passed away on Thursday, August 15, 2024, at her home. She was born on October 15, 1925, the daughter of Victor and “Goldie” (Thomas) Sowers. On July 22, 1956, she married William M. Stevenson, in Kingman, Indiana, and he preceded her in death on June 13, 2010.

Phyllis graduated from Kingman High School. She earned her bachelor’s degree from Indiana State University, and her master’s from Ball State University in education. Phyllis taught for a total of 27 years before retiring from teaching at Kokomo Center Schools. She had previously taught at Frankfort and Lafayette. Phyllis enjoyed jigsaw puzzles, making baby blankets, and helping with the food pantry. She helped at Harbor Manor nursing home with Bingo. She was a member of Heaven’s Handywork and White River Christian Church where she has a scholarship named after her.

Phyllis is survived by her daughter, Cindy (Scott York) Brown; stepchildren, William (Betty) Stevenson, and Janet “Susie” Stevenson; grandchildren, Brian Weida, Jason Weida, Adam Stevenson, Amy Stevenson Robins, Joshua Brown, and Jordan Brown; and several great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

Along with her husband of 54 years, William Stevenson, she was preceded in death by her parents, and brother Robert Sowers.

A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 22, 2024, at Shirley & Stout Funeral Home & Crematory, 1315 W. Lincoln Rd. Kokomo, with Pastor Tom Roberts officiating. Entombment will follow at Sunset Memory Gardens. Friends are invited to visit with the family from 11:00 a.m. until the time of service on Thursday, at the funeral home. Linda Sue Watkins Shook Creed

Linda Sue Watkins Shook Creed (née Lehman) passed away on August 18, 2024, at the age of 68 in Kokomo, Indiana. She was born on February 13, 1956, in Logansport, Indiana.

Linda graduated from Kokomo High School in 1974 and went on to build a diverse career. She worked with the Salvation Army, Indianapolis Newspapers, AT&T, and the Kokomo Tribune, dedicating herself to serving and informing her community through various roles. She graduated from IUK in 1979 and was a substitute teacher. She sold Avon and was a customer service professional throughout her career and was continually winning contests for her customer service excellence. She was also an avid supporter of We Care.

Throughout her life, Linda attended Saint Joan of Arc Catholic Church and One Church - A Church of the Nazarene. Linda was connected to her faith through her family and church community.

Linda enjoyed board and card games, attending concerts, and reading Stephen King novels. She was an avid supporter of We Care Kokomo, loved watching sports, taking country rides to pet cows, visiting zoos, and cherished vacations. Above all, spending time with her family was her greatest joy.

She is survived by her husband, Bob Creed; sons, Jeffrey Watkins, Matthew Watkins, and William Joseph (Joey) Shook; daughter-in-law, Bry Homeier; her beloved grandchildren, Annalee and August Watkins; and Sister, Carol (Brad) Snyder; nieces, Sarah (Wes DeBoy) Potts, Katherine (James) Slider, Jasmine Potts; nephew, Kelcey Snyder; great-nieces, Leia Slider, Hayleigh Snyder; great-nephew, Linkin Slider; special friend, Tammy Saul; fav cous, Karla Sammons. Linda was preceded in death by her parents, Art and Lucille Lehman, and husband, Billy Shook.

Visitation will take place from 12:00 PM - 2:00 PM Friday, August 23, 2024, at Sunset Memory Garden Funeral Home. Chester Lee “Chet” Brittain

Chester Lee “Chet” Brittain, 88, of Kokomo, passed away at 7:51 a.m. on Tuesday, August 20, 2024, at his home. He was born October 8, 1935, in Flora, to Chester Carl “Chet” and Pheobe (Arion) Brittain. On April 8, 1983, he married Rebecca “Becky” Moon, in Sharpsville, and she survives.

Chet graduated from Kokomo High School in 1954 and went on to work in supervision at Delco Electronics for 38 years before retiring. He enjoyed woodworking, baseball, and bowling and was an avid Indiana Hoosiers fan. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Kokomo.

In addition to his wife, Becky Brittain, survivors include his daughters, Karlene (Christopher) Costello and Kamie Brittain; stepdaughter, Laurie (Mike) Lowman; grandchildren, Kari (David) Heleine, Kassi (Steve) Morton, Kyle Brittain, Kevin Brittain, Cara Miller, Courtney (Cornell) Evans, and Dylan Miller; and several great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Kris Brittain; stepson, Brian Louks; and two sisters, Susie Hollingsworth and Joyce Brown.

Funeral services for Chet will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, August 23, 2024, at Shirley & Stout Funeral Homes & Crematory, 1315 W. Lincoln Rd., Kokomo, with Pastor Paul Martin officiating. Ronald Joseph Eichelberger

Ronald Joseph Eichelberger, born to Albert J. and Lorelei M. Eichelberger in St. Louis, Missouri, on February 27, 1953, passed away peacefully, surrounded by the warmth and love of family and friends, on July 26, 2024.

Ronald’s life was defined by his boundless passion and adventurous spirit. He approached every day with a zest for life and an open heart. His gentle nature and patience were evident in all his interactions, making him a cherished presence to everyone who knew him. Ronald's enthusiasm for life extended to his many hobbies, which included CB radios, mechanics, and anything electronic. His curiosity and skill with gadgets were legendary, and he could often be found tinkering with the latest technology or fixing things around the house.

Fishing was Ronald’s ultimate pleasure. He had a deep love for the serenity and challenge of fishing, and he was known to say he would fish in a puddle if given the chance. His joy was contagious as he shared this pastime with friends and family. Ronald also had a love for dancing and music, often the life of the party, bringing joy and rhythm wherever he went. But above all, his greatest happiness came from spending time with his family and friends. He valued these relationships above all else and made every gathering memorable with his warmth and kindness.

Ronald was preceded in death by his loving parents, Albert J. and Lorelei M. Eichelberger; his devoted wife, Julia Eichelberger; his cherished daughter, Jessica Piel; his beloved granddaughter, Kaylyn Eichelberger; and his dear brother, Jerry Lee Eichelberger. He leaves behind a legacy of love and laughter with his surviving children: Stacy (late Mike) Farinella, Richard Eichelberger, Angela (Jason) Godwin, Cheryl (Josh) Marrujo, and Jen Tyler; along with 16 adoring grandchildren who will miss their grandpa dearly. He is also survived by his siblings, Sandy (Ed) Billo, Darlene White, Bob (Carol) Eichelberger, Karen (Billy) Crowley, Bill (Patty) Eichelberger, Debbie (Danny III) O’Connor, Lorie (Pete) Caira, and Michelle Eichelberger.

Ronald’s life was a testament to the roles he cherished most: son, father, grandfather, brother, cousin, uncle, and friend. His absence leaves a void in many hearts, but his memory will live on through the countless stories and cherished moments shared with him.

A Celebration of Life was held to honor Ronald’s vibrant spirit. Graveside service will be held at 2:45 p.m. on Friday, August 23, 2024, at Crown Point Cemetery.



Athena Nichole Heron

Athena Nichole Heron, 36 of Windfall died on Tuesday, August 20, 2024, at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. She was born in Kokomo on August 6, 1988, to Russell and Cynthia S. (Vawter) Heron.

A dedicated and compassionate individual, Athena graduated from Tipton High School Class of 2007. She found fulfillment in her work as a CNA at the Waters of Tipton, where she enjoyed helping others. In her spare time, she enjoyed listening to music and spending time with her family. Most of all she treasured the time she spent hanging out with her daughters.

She is survived by her children, Maria Artemis Dick, age 13, and Sophia Lynn Dick, age 10; her parents, Russell and Cynthia Heron; brother, Alec Heron and wife Jaylena of Kokomo; grandparents, Jerry Vawter of Windfall, Phil Heron and wife Martha of Tipton; the father of her children, Trevor Dick; and the many people who had a positive impact on her life. Athena was preceded in death by her grandmother, Sue Vawter.

The family will receive friends, share stories, and celebrate her life during visitation on Friday, August 23 from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Young-Nichols Funeral Home.

Betty Jean McCarter

Betty Jean McCarter, age 94, of Kokomo, Indiana, passed away on Monday, August 19, 2024. Betty was born on May 20, 1930, to Charles and Stella (Breeden) Campbell in Lafayette, Indiana. A staple of the Kokomo community, she owned and operated Kokomo's own Handy Hardware for 30 years. She had a proclivity for traveling anywhere, but she would always return to Florida for the winters. She took great pleasure in enjoying Sunday dinners with her family and spending time with friends. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, playing cards, and shopping at thrift stores, but playing Bingo was her favorite.

Betty never knew a stranger. She talked to anyone and everyone. She was always the brightest light in the room, and her absence will forever be felt by those who had the privilege of knowing her.

She is survived by her daughter, Debra (David) Schmitt; grandson, Chad (Deanna) McCarter; granddaughter, Christina Foster; great-granddaughter, Brielle McCarter; great-grandsons, Austin (Molly) Foster, Tyler (Hallie) Foster and Cody Foster; great-great-grandsons, Colton Haegely and Jaxon Foster; great-great-granddaughter, Arlen Foster; sister, Joyce (Eddie) Addison; and daughter-in-law, Kathy McCarter.

Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Roger McCarter; daughter, Jeann McCarter; and son, Michael McCarter.

A time of visitation for Betty will be held Saturday, August 24, 2024, from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM at Ellers Mortuary, 725S. Main Street, Kokomo, Indiana 46901, with a funeral service to begin at 1:00 PM. A burial with committal service will immediately follow the funeral service at Kokomo Memorial Park Cemetery, Kokomo, IN.



Jesse Samuel Kendall

Jesse Samuel Kendall, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on July 17, 2024, in Kokomo, IN, at the age of 77. Born on July 5, 1947, in Marion, IN, to Robert Lee Kendall and Evelyn June Spencer, Jesse's life was marked by his courage, thoughtfulness, and a unique sense of humor that brought joy to all who knew him.

After graduating from Kokomo High School, Jesse was drafted into the Army in 1966, serving his country with distinction in Vietnam until 1968. Upon returning home, he embarked on a lifelong career as a mechanic, working at T&K Diagnostics, Delco, and Chrysler. His expertise and dedication to his craft were evident to all who worked alongside him.

Jesse's passion for cars extended beyond his professional life. He was an avid car enthusiast, often found at car shows or in his garage, painting cars with a meticulous hand. His love for music often accompanied these activities, creating a soundtrack to many cherished memories. Jesse's love for his furry companions, Lucy and Yoda, was equally profound, and they were a constant source of comfort and companionship.

Family was the cornerstone of Jesse's life. He was a devoted husband to his wife of 32 years, Betty Lou Kendall, who cared for him lovingly during his brief 11-week illness and throughout their years together. Jesse's legacy continues through his stepdaughters Wendy Taylor, Lisa Sommers (Michael), Paula Muller (Robin), and Tricia Blankenship. His role as a grandfather was one he embraced with open arms, leaving behind a tapestry of memories with his many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.

Jesse's grandson, Sam Dunn, held a special place in his heart as his best car buddy, sharing in the joy and camaraderie that only a shared hobby can bring. His enduring friendships with Howard Lee Brandon and Kimberly Brandon of 42 years, Captain Morgan for over 20 years, and Scott Walter were a testament to his loyal and caring nature.

Preceded in death by his parents and his stepson, Paul Holler, Jesse's absence is deeply felt by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His life was a reflection of the values he held dear: courage in the face of adversity, thoughtfulness towards others, and a humor that could lighten even the darkest of days.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Compassus Hospice for the exceptional care provided to Jesse in his final days. A special thanks to Nurse Megan and Dr. Muhammed and their staff for their compassion and support.

Jesse Samuel Kendall's life was a beautiful tapestry woven with love, service, and the pursuit of his passions. He will be remembered not only for the life he led but also for the countless ways he touched the lives of others. His spirit, characterized by strength and kindness, will continue to inspire and guide his family and friends. Jesse's story is not one of an end, but a lasting legacy that will be cherished and celebrated by all who were fortunate enough to know him.

Alyssa Taylor Smith

Alyssa Taylor Smith, known affectionately as Taylor to her friends and family, passed away peacefully on August 12, 2024, in Kokomo, IN, at the age of 32. Born on May 29, 1992, in Las Vegas, NV, she was a beacon of joy and love throughout her life.

Taylor grew up in a lively household with her parents, Cynthia Barrett and the late Brett Barrett, along with her siblings, the late Brandon Barrett, Brock Barrett, and Ashley Barrett. Her family was the cornerstone of her life, and she carried that foundation of love and support into her own family when she married her beloved husband, Jeff Smith, and became the devoted mother to her treasured son, Brody Smith.

Taylor's role as a stay-at-home mom was one she embraced wholeheartedly. She poured her energy and love into creating a warm and nurturing environment for Brody, whom she often said was her greatest accomplishment and joy. Her love for her son was evident in every aspect of her life, as she was often seen cheering him on at school events, sharing in his discoveries, and simply savoring the everyday moments they spent together.

Taylor's vivacious personality made her a magnet for friendship and laughter. She had the rare ability to light up a room with her presence, thanks to her beautiful smile and sparkling eyes, which reflected the genuine kindness and warmth she felt for others. Her interests were diverse, but she had a particular passion for reality TV shows, which provided her with much-needed relaxation and entertainment. She was also an avid swimmer, cherishing the moments of tranquility and strength she found in the water.

Above all, Taylor was known for her loving, funny, and selfless nature. She had an uncanny ability to put others before herself, making sure that her friends and family felt valued and loved. Her home was often filled with the sounds of laughter and lively conversations as she enjoyed hosting gatherings and ensuring everyone had a great time.

Taylor's legacy is carried on by her loving mother, Cynthia Barrett; her steadfast husband, Jeff Smith; her adored son, Brody Smith; her supportive brother, Brock Barrett; her caring sister, Ashley Barrett; and her cherished nieces, Payton and Kennedy Benavidez. Her spirit, love, and laughter will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.

The world has lost a beautiful soul in Taylor, but her memory will continue to inspire those she left behind to live life with kindness, humor, and a selfless heart. Her impact on the world was as profound as the love she shared so freely, and she will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all who had the pleasure of knowing her.
