A visit from Bud

I recently contacted Bud Fields about an informal archery lesson. I have shot archery since I was 16. In fact, I attended one of Bud's "Bowhunter Clinics" in September 1977 at the Galveston Archery Club.

I haven't had formal contact with Bud, really, since then. I watch all his podcasts, and I've read his many articles over the years in different publications, including the Kokomo Lantern. Interestingly, my wife and I rented a house from Bud's in-laws for four years (1985-89).

I asked Bud if he would be willing to watch me shoot a few arrows under his watchful eye, to see if there is anything I can improve on. I offered to pay for his services, but he refused. We set up, and Boy, did I have a time! Bud game me several tips, cracked several jokes, and shared stories how he met and became acquainted with Fred Bear of Bear Archery fame.

My very first shot was amazingly a bullseye, and without hesitation, Bud quipped, "Well, I'm a better instructor than I realized!" He did offer several tips that will help me fine tune my technique. He then took me inside his den where we traded hunting stories, and I met his gracious wife.

Bud is old-school in a way that's uncommon these days. a great outdoorsman with years of wisdom. He's forgotten more than most "experts" will ever know. Anyway, I had a great experience rekindling an old friendship. I only wish I hadn't waited so long! Thanks for reading my story.
