May flowers are in bloom, and the sound of baseballs hitting leather mitts can be heard across Greentown. It’s Spring, and that means the Greentown Youth Baseball and Softball leagues are in full swing … literally.

The season kicked off with a parade. Each team rode on floats through the town, and the players tossed candy to the watchers.

Of course, that meant a bit of clean-up after the procession, but friends and neighbors happily swept away the colorful confections that went unclaimed.

Once the parade reached the ball fields, the leagues held opening ceremonies. And then the familiar cry of “Play Ball!” echoed across the diamonds.

The Kokomo Lantern’s Adam Hartsough was there to catch opening day action between Dishon Transmission Service of Greentown and Align Orthodontics of Tipton. Visit the Lantern’s Facebook page to see photos of the game — with galleries featuring each team — as well as highlights from the parade!
