Protect your water pipes from low temps

Winter’s here! That means cold weather, lower temperatures, and the risk of frozen water pipes. To avoid costly repairs or being without water, follow these easy tips to winterize your pipes so your water flows smoothly all winter long

  • Locate and test your main water shut-off valve.
  • Drain outdoor hoses and irrigation systems.
  • Eliminate drafts around pipes.
  • Keep an eye on areas where pipes are most vulnerable, such as basements, garages, crawl spaces and exterior walls.
  • Open cabinet or vanity doors slightly ajar to let warmer air circulate.
  • Allow a small trickle of water to run to help maintain steady water flow.
  • Turn off your main water valve and warm the area around the pipe safely, never with an open flame or an unattended heater.
  • Once pipes are thawed, slowly turn the water back on and check for any leaks.
